You are risking 50 to win 150, so the call breaks even at 25.0% equity. Below 25.0% it loses money; above it, it makes money. Whether your hand clears that bar depends on villain's range, which the price alone cannot tell you.
What pot odds tell you
Pot odds convert the price of a call into the minimum equity that call needs to break even. If you must call 50 chips to win a pot of 150, you are risking 50 to win 150 — you need to win at least a third of the time.
Required equity = call / (pot after villain's bet + call)
How the calculation works
Add villain's bet to the pot, then add the amount you must call. Your call is that last figure divided into the total — the share of the pot you are buying with it.
The same two numbers also give alpha (how often villain's bluff must work) and minimum defense frequency (how much of your range has to continue). One bet size, three readings.
Pot odds by bet size
- Villain bets 25% pot
- You risk 0.25 to win 1.25. You need 16.7% equity to break even, and villain's bluffs need you to fold 20.0% of the time (MDF 80.0%).
- Villain bets 33% pot
- You risk 0.33 to win 1.33. You need 19.9% equity to break even, and villain's bluffs need you to fold 24.8% of the time (MDF 75.2%).
- Villain bets 50% pot
- You risk 0.5 to win 1.50. You need 25.0% equity to break even, and villain's bluffs need you to fold 33.3% of the time (MDF 66.7%).
- Villain bets 66% pot
- You risk 0.66 to win 1.66. You need 28.4% equity to break even, and villain's bluffs need you to fold 39.8% of the time (MDF 60.2%).
- Villain bets 75% pot
- You risk 0.75 to win 1.75. You need 30.0% equity to break even, and villain's bluffs need you to fold 42.9% of the time (MDF 57.1%).
- Villain bets 100% pot
- You risk 1 to win 2.00. You need 33.3% equity to break even, and villain's bluffs need you to fold 50.0% of the time (MDF 50.0%).
- Villain bets 150% pot
- You risk 1.5 to win 2.50. You need 37.5% equity to break even, and villain's bluffs need you to fold 60.0% of the time (MDF 40.0%).
- Villain bets 200% pot
- You risk 2 to win 3.00. You need 40.0% equity to break even, and villain's bluffs need you to fold 66.7% of the time (MDF 33.3%).
Common mistakes
- Comparing the price to your hand instead of your equity
- Pot odds give you a number to beat. Beating it is a question about how often your hand wins against everything villain can hold — not about whether the hand feels strong.
- Using the pot before the bet
- The denominator is the pot AFTER villain bets and after your call. Using the pot before the bet makes every call look cheaper than it is.
- Treating pot odds and minimum defense frequency as the same thing
- Pot odds are about one hand's call. Minimum defense frequency is about how much of your whole range continues. A hand can fail the first and your range still has to satisfy the second.
Practical examples
- 100 pot, 25 bet
- Villain fires a small probe on the turn. You risk 25 to win 125, so you need 16.7% equity — odds of 5.0 : 1. Across your whole range, minimum defense frequency asks you to continue with 80%.
- 100 pot, 50 bet
- The standard half-pot bet. You risk 50 to win 150, so you need 25.0% equity — odds of 3.0 : 1. Across your whole range, minimum defense frequency asks you to continue with 67%.
- 100 pot, 100 bet
- A pot-sized river bet. You risk 100 to win 200, so you need 33.3% equity — odds of 2.0 : 1. Across your whole range, minimum defense frequency asks you to continue with 50%.
- 100 pot, 200 bet
- An overbet shove. You risk 200 to win 300, so you need 40.0% equity — odds of 1.5 : 1. Across your whole range, minimum defense frequency asks you to continue with 33%.

Are pot odds and minimum defense frequency the same thing?
No. Pot odds tell one hand whether a call breaks even. Minimum defense frequency tells your whole range how often it must continue so the bettor's bluffs do not print money automatically.
